Wreck removal of m/v “Slatina” cargo ship

M/V Slatina has been a freight ship type of 4 800 gross registered tons (GRT) and he was part of the navy trademark of Romania, being owned by shipping companies NAVROM Constanta.

1. Short history:

Ship has been built at Galati Shipyard in 1973, in welded steel with two decks and the following features:

  • Length (L) = 106.20 m
  • Width (B) = 14.80 m
  • Draft min/max (T min / max) = 5.64 / 7.06 m
  • Height (H) = 8.50 m
  • Displacement max. = 6920 dwt
  • Net weighte = 2120 to

In 1989, the freight ship M / V Slatina anchored in berths 36/37 New Basin Galati harbor for capital repair. On 14 August 1990, the ship was overthrown, leaning on the starboard berths in law 36/37, the Mm. 79+ 450, in unclear circumstances. At the time of the sinking ship, have not undertaken its refloating operations, shore wreck being provided using steel cables in areas bow and the stern.

Wreck stabilized skew towards the quay, measured perpendicular distance between the quay and the aft end of the wreck is about 50 meters, the maximum depth in the area is 24 meters and the perpendicular distance measured between the quay and the forward end of approximately 30 meters with a maximum depth in the area of about 16 meters.

Since the ship is in Berths 36/37 for repairs, all three huts were open, which caused a strong clogging inside the wreck over the 22 year period as was under the waters of the Danube.

2. General considerations

From start to finish, the operation of dislocation of the wreck of the freighter M / V Slatina has been a large challenge for staff involved in the execution Superquatro Group.

The operation of dislocation forced unfolding at the same time, certain stages of work at both land or water.

Since the site surface to dry handed over by the Beneficiary has been less than that specified in contractual documents, which I have been obliged to rethinking the approach of the construction, so that it can be taken at the end on the terms laid down in the contract.

Thus, instead of placing the dry firing hydraulic Hercules to make a logical position, perpendicular to the wreck, we had the whole thing front to concentrate it to about 50-60 meters upstream. This situation required the use of longer lengths of chains used naval operations during deployment and additional maneuvering in front of it with ships and cranes of the device. For the same reason, the operations of cutting and pulling the wreckage near the shore were performed at an angle of 30 ° - 35 °.

3. Performing works dislocation wreck M / V Slatina.

Works dislocation wreck cargo M / V Slatina were conducted in the period February 2012 - July 2013, was carried out step by step the following steps:

A. Inland:

It was started by preparing the work site, an operation which resulted in the carrying out of the grubbing works existing vegetation and for the removal of the various foreign bodies existing boundary (different materials).

Still have been carried out, one at a time, 5 (five) special anchors (after a special project executed), positioned based on the small size of site-handed over and calculated in such a way that the pull forces rezultantele maximum. It is to be mentioned that, due to unforeseeable circumstances site, the efficiency of the drawing hydraulic equipment Hercules has been reduced by about 30%.

To allow machines on yard were downloaded about 3,000 cubic stone, which was then compacted.

In the next step was to fit in the positions of work of the hydraulics of pull Hercules.

B. On water:

In parallel operations at land, the works have been commissioned and were started deploymen of the wreck of the M/V freighter Slatina. They started by carrying out preliminary inspections, the team of divers, in locating the wreckage, as well as possibly other materials placed accidentally in the work area, followed by its extremities sation.

After inspecting the metal cables provided to avoid the wreckage slipping into the fairway and found that all are broken, wreckage was anchored to reassure bow and stern areas. Before carrying out the fitting chains gauge shipbuilding K76 to ensure technial body, it was necessary that, together with the team of divers, to act for the removal of structural elements of the wreck (example: deck lids, sheerlegs, pillars) and other foreign bodies trapped in the wreckage or between the wreck and mal (example: tree-trunks, twigs, bowlines scraps). For sawing metal structures installation of loading/unloading were used equipment partially cutting wire diamantat Hilti and partial cutting plant Broco underwater.

Following completion operations to remove some elements of wreckage and other obstacles that made divers access to the inside of the three huts inspections were carried out as a result of which it was established that the degree of clogging of them exceeds 70%. Alluvial material removal from inside the wreckage and surrounding (area located upstream from the bow, the area between the wreck and the shore, near the wreckage and body area located downstream from the stern of the wreck) he acted with the help of floating cranes equipped with polyp grapple. Also, in order to clogging hard to reach areas inside the wreckage had acted with air-lift installation handled by means of a floating cranes, for the deployment of alluvial material being used a jet of water under pressure. Clogging operations were coordinated by the team of divers

Also, in order to clogging hard to reach areas inside the wreckage had acted with air-lift installation handled by means of a floating cranes, for the deployment of alluvial material being used a jet of water under pressure. Clogging operations were coordinated by the team of divers.

B.1 Blocsection I ( bow and warehouse no.1):

In the next step were positioned shipbuilding chains K76 to be cut/pull in the area between storage no. 1 and no. 2 on wreck, future, using hydraulic equipment Hercules being carried out sawing blocsection I - respectively the storage no. 1 and bow wreckage. After cutting, blocsection I has been pulled near jetty has been unplugged in full and has been cut into smaller parts that could not be handled and loaded into the barge.

B.2 Blocksection II ( warehouse no. 2 and warehouse no. 3):

For cutting blocksection II - storage no. 2 and no. 3 - chains were positioned drawing / cutting using floating cranes of 50 ft and 16 ft, the operations being carried out with the assistance of divers team. After cutting blocksection II and separation from the rest of the wreckage (superstructure and engine room) ,team of divers charged with the facility Broco underwater cutting walls of storage no. 2 and no. 3 of board port. The operation was performed in order to remove as much of the alluvial material left inside the two storage, so that the weight of this blocksection to be the smalest.

On completion of the clogging, blocksection II was close to shore and raised above the water level in a position that allowed cutting with oxy-fuel , parts of the double bottom and deck installations located between the two storage. The remaining part of blocksection was continued to draw near the jetty, then cut by flame cutting device and loaded into the barge.

B.3 Blocksection III (wreck superstructure and engine room):

Dislocation of the Danube riverbed bottom of the last remaining parts of the wreck of the freighter M / V Slatina was undoubtedly the most difficult stage of the work, this being due to the following factors:

  • Blocsection III-Position located at a distance of about 50 yards from the jetty and a maximum depth of about 25 meters;
  • The existence of danger in situations that could have produced the Danube due to pollution and fuel oil from the wreck installations;
  • Very large distance compared to the position of the shooting hydraulic equipment Hercules (about 150-200 meters);
  • Greutatea foarte mare estimata la aproximativ 4000 tone a blocsectiei III, datorita gradului de colmatare de 100% al interiorului acesteia;
  • Imposibility to work with the team of divers around blocsection underwater currents due to large (> 3 m / s) and zero visibility.

Thus, for the approximation of the jetty blocsection III, in the area in which they have been placed the pull equipment Hercules, were positioned more shipbuilding chains K76, used for rotating and pulling it. After positioning operations naval K76 chains was used almost entirely naval chain length K76 available (about 2000 meters).

After pulling and lifting the water above blocksection III, work crew clogging operations conducted simultaneously, with washing facilities with running water under pressure and type Palfinger cranes equipped with claw and cutting of the hull and structural elements indoor plants using oxy-fuel cutting. In remote areas (engine room, cabins, huts, etc..) Solidified alluvial material objects or debris mixed with the interior of the vessel was removed manually with shovels and picks.

Following these works, cut metal pieces were built using floating cranes 50 ft or 100 ft, being loaded into barges.

Following the work of clogging and cutting the portion of blocsection III located above the water level, firing resumed operations at the wharf and lift to the surface of the remaining part of this.

To be mentioned that partial charge double bottom that was fixed to the base and the main engine of the wreckage, it was a complex operation, which is followed by separating the main engine of the double bottom, so that it can be loaded on the barge. The weight of the engine main technial cargoului M/V Slatina was approximately 100 tonnes. We remind them that both main engine and diesel-generators were loosened, while sitting at the sinking ship, in various stages of repair works.

During deployment operations and debit blocsection III has paid particular attention to preventing and combating the situations that could cause accidental pollution by oil or other oil remnants from the wreckage.For this, it was formed by a team of specially trained personnel, it has monitored continuously surface water and of the entire perimeter of work and who has acted to eliminate sources of pollution from the wreck.

Totally, during displacement operations freighter wreck Slatina were used 300 metres from dam heads; 600 metres from dam floating absorbent; 297 kg biodegradable detergent; 2860 kg absorbent material. It was requested intervention specialized vessels Depol AFDJ Galati being taken a heavy oil power plant recovered from the wreck and recovered and handed over to specialized operators a quantity of 4000 kg solid waste from the interior design of the wreck.

4. Mentions:

Apart from the wreck of the freighter M / V Slatina were displaced and evacuated two mooring pontoons (one with a length of about 30 meters and a length of 16 meters), one of which was not mentioned in the documentation provided Beneficiary.

On 18.07.2013 was completed in barge loading operation of all parts and scrap metal from the wreck of the freighter M / V Slatina and restoration work in the perimeter of the work had been completed on 08.02.2013, the entire site being issued to the Employer. One with another in the deployment of operations cargoului the wreck M/V Ontario resulted in a quantity of iron about 2315 tons.

5. Conclusions:

Although working conditions were only approach due to depths of over 20 meters, zero visibility, currents of 3 m / s or above this value, although the beneficiary failed to ensure optimal access to the work area due to exceptional endowments (3000 drawing capacity tf, floating cranes 16 ft, 50 ft and 100 ft, pumps, diamond wire cutters), and the collective power of a large work, SUPERQUATRO GRUP has successfully completed.

It should also be noted that although planning operations were performed in the smallest detail, during the development works dislocation, the team of professionals in this operation was permanently mobilized to adapt methods and work program to new situations that appeared as preliminary steps were completed.

It has to be noted that, for over 22 years, the wreck of the freighter M / V 'Slatina' with the wreck of the freighter 'Transylvania', was for many naval specialists or navigators concern in the sense of finding a viable solution for the removal of the two wrecks that were visible, were creating problems for navigation or access berths Galati, constituted a danger to the environment, and that pride was a stain on the city's navigators tradition Galati.

In addition to exceptional equipment and specialized staff SC SUPERQUATRO GROUP LLC Galati, the completion of the deployment of the wreck of the freighter M / V Slatina attended naval engineers, naval architects and technical experts.

6. Did you know?:

At this very moment, there are reports that shows that, on the Danube, from Sulina to Moldova Noua, there are no less than 110 wrecks ?
