Improvement of navigation conditions on the Danube between Calarasi and Braila

Along with development of this project, SUPERQUATRO GRUP has completed or is in progress at the time of writing this material, a series of large-scale hydrotechnical works, which are carried in the riverbed of the Danube between Calarasi (km 375) and Braila (km 175) this sector is part of the Pan-European corridor no. VII.

By implementing the project work as generically called "Improvement the navigation conditions on the Danube between Calarasi and Braila and complementary measures" we are focused to achieve the following requirements:

  • redistribution of flow and improve the phenomena of so called "aging" of the sector of Old Danube, the section between Calarasi and Braila;
  • increasing the availability of water in low water situations and environments;
  • providing normal parameters of river navigation in the area - in low water situations and environments, respecting the Danube Commission recommendations - a minimum depth of about navigation. ENR 2.5 m and a width of the navigable channel of 180 m;
  • achieve fast connectivity between the Danube and the Danube - Black Sea without being necessary the secondary diversion route navigation Bala - Borcea, covering a distance situation involving additional 105 km in heavy navigation conditions;
  • reducing the total amount of sediments carryed by the Old Danube, with a corresponding reduction of maintenance dredging volumes.

The hydrotechnical works performed by SUPERQUATRO GRUP in the critical points Ostrovu Lupului and Epurasu, in accordance with the technical documentation was as follows:

a) “Ostrovu Lupu” critical point

  • Submersible directing dam;
  • Bottom sill;
  • Dredging in the fairway in order to ensure the minimum navigation depths on Dunarea Veche (Old Danube)

b) “Epurasu” critical point

  • Submersible directing dam;
  • Dredging in the fairway in order to ensure the minimum navigation depths in Caragheorghe critical point.

For the execution of the works, there were issued detailed projects that comprise new technical solutions that replace certain materials from the work, such as:

  • The fascine cushion from the body of banks’ protecting, of the directing dam and of the bottom sill was replaced by Terrafix B813 geo-composite filled with sand, that has the same role of protection and guard against the erosion. Terrafix B813 geo-composite is a cushion from multi-layered geotextile, manufactured from a geotextile of 842 gr/sqm and a geotextile of 300 gr/sqm that encapsulates a sand layer (about 5.000gr/sqm). The total mass of this geo-composite is about 6100 gr/sqm. This geotextile has a filtering and stabilizing role at hydrodynamic drive, and the sand layer has the role of testing the material in case it will be installed under water;
  • The geotextile cushion on fascine grid was replaced with a double-layered composite, Terrafix B813 G10. Terrafix B813 G10 geo-composite is a multi-layered geo-textile cushion, produced by monolithizing a non-woven – interwoven geotextile with a separation / filtering / protection role and a woven geotextile with a reinforcing role;

It should be noted that, apart from staff and equipment involved in the actual execution of the works, a special emphasis was placed on providing the necessary logistics operation construction sites, especially in the Epurasu Arm access can be done only on water, land access and there are only until the town Izvoarele or Oltina.
